Zara’s idea for change started on her way to soccer practice. In 2020, she noticed a growing line of cars outside the Interfaith Food Pantry Network in Morris Plains as she passed by. Zara knew more families were turning to food pantries for help during the pandemic, but seeing the need firsthand had a profound effect.
Zara wasn’t sure how to help, especially since in-person volunteering was limited due to COVID. She spoke to one of her teachers, who had a great idea. “She suggested using my love of art to create and sell handcrafted cards to raise funds for our neighbors in need,” Zara recalls.
Zara designed a small collection of handmade greeting cards featuring origami carnations, tissue-paper butterflies, floral monograms and appliqué pets. She sold the cards quickly, raising around $100 for IFPN.
That first donation inspired Zara. She continued making cards and in 2021, she founded Good Intentions. This initiative combined her passion for art with education, fundraising and researching food insecurity and food waste. She has expanded into digital art, custom projects and illustration workshops. Zara also leads information sessions for students and community groups and has written about sustainable food systems and food waste. She has found other ways to help, including connecting surplus produce from her neighbors’ gardens with families in need. To date, Zara has donated almost $3,000 to IFPN.
For Zara, making a difference starts with recognizing that everyone has something to give. “You don’t need a big budget or a formal organization,” she says. “Find a cause you truly care about, start small and stay consistent.”
Now a high school senior balancing school and soccer, Zara plans to study economics and public policy in college while continuing her work. “Most universities that I am applying to have pantries and programs combating local food insecurity,” Zara notes. “I hope to volunteer, educate students about food resources and participate in campus food recovery efforts.”
Her projects are powerful reminders that change is always possible. Zara’s handmade cards have raised significant funds, spread awareness about food insecurity, and made a meaningful difference in our community.
